Phase III Ability Level: Certification Process

SEMS™ Certification is available to small businesses that have completed the Knowledge Level e-learning course and are implementing the sustainability plan created in the Skills Level interactive workshop.

Ultimately, the goal of the SEMS ™Certification program is to move sustainability along a continuum from awareness to action to excellence. Demonstration on the Ability Level requires suppliers to pass a preliminary online assessment of Performance Indicators and a site inspection to determine if specific sustainability criteria have been met.

A certificate/certification component rewards and recognizes small companies that have achieved integration of sustainability practices and are striving to meet the objectives and goals of their sustainability plan. There are two kinds of awards: a SEMS Certificate of Sustainability Achievement© and Suppler Excellence in Managing Sustainability™ Certification, which consists of a wall plaque and profile on the SEMS™ website.

Three-Phase Sustainability Continuum

PHASE I KNOWLEDGE LEVEL Objectives Clarify the business case for sustainability Establish a knowledge baseline Sensitize the business for cultural and organizational change	PHASE II SKILLS LEVEL Objectives Develop a sustainability planning document Identify critical issues Align business operations with sustainable goals	PHASE III ABILITY LEVEL Objectives Third-party verification sustainable policies and practices are functional Ongoing evaluation ofsystems/processes to recognize best practices
